Kingdom living occurs through a range of contexts – today I want to continue this thought as I enter ‘the Secret Place’
‘But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly’ (Matthew 6:6 NKJV)
When Jesus taught on prayer, He gave primary emphasis to the secret place. The first thing He taught concerning prayer was the importance of the secret place. In the verses following the one mentioned above, He would teach us how to pray, but first He teaches us where to pray.
Jesus teaches us something stunning – “Your Father is already in the secret place. He has gone ahead of you. He is waiting for you. The moment we get into the secret place, Our Father is waiting there for us”
Jesus goes further and gives us the key to finding the secret place. To get there all we have to do is: shut the door! When we enter our room and shut the door, we are in the presence of the Father. Instantaneously!
It has been suggested that the room Jesus referred to would have been the storage room. Most of Jesus’ audiences would have lived in homes with only one room, but in Palestine it was common to have a separate storage area with a door to protect foodstuffs. This would have been the only room with a door.
I want to use this blog to search the significance in this powerful teaching
The secret place is close to the Most High God. ‘Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart’ (Psalm 24:3-4 NKJV). No sin can be there. The greatest thing we can ever accomplish in this life is to sit before the great King. The search for significance ends when we have the total affection of the only One who is significant.
When Israel was in the wilderness, God manifested his presence to them through a cloud. It came down and covered the tabernacle night and day. And it acted as their guide. When the cloud moved, they moved, and when it stayed, they stayed. They put their confidence in that visible cloud of God’s presence. Today, that same cloud of His presence hovers in the secret place. It waits every moment to envelope us.
The secret place is a place where we are called to dwell. ‘He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty’ (Psalm 91:1). To dwell means to live in that place. To live next to the Almighty, right under His shadow. The entry into that secret place in God can be a different place every day and different for each person. It is finding that place in God where everything is at peace. It is not an absence of problems or trials. It is just that place where you can fix your eyes on Him and everything else fades away. Once we’ve found the secret place, the challenge is to “dwell” in it for the rest of the day. It is staying in that place even at work, even when busy with mundane things. Our permanent abode is to be in this secret place. He longs for us to come and be with Him. He truly desires it more than we do.
God is looking for those in this season that will open the door to the secret place and linger in His presence.
The secret place is not the destination, it is only the catalyst. It is designed of God to establish us in an intimate friendship with Him that is walked out through the course of our everyday lives. The goal we ‘must be after is an everyday walk of unbroken communion with our Lord and friend. The Lord called me to a greater intimacy with Him early in my ministry. This call has never ceased and my daily challenge is to find the presence of God and live there.
The secret place transforms our lives. It is a wonderful thing to be shut in with God, developing a consistent prayer life. God promises that as we become a seeking, praying servant, His presence will break forth in our life – closing and opening doors and working his divine order all around us. Yet something even greater than this will happen: We are being transformed into His likeness, with “ever increasing glory”!
The secret place becomes the portal to the throne of God, the place where we taste Heaven itself. If we receive this word we have gained one of the greatest secrets to intimacy with God. God’s greatest desire is to indwell His people with His presence. We bring Heaven to Earth.
One of the most essential elements for me is to have intact my secret place with God as the foundation. ‘In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock’ (Psalm 27:5 NKJV).
And the secret I learnt all those years ago: shut the door
