“Let me give you a new anointing in your prayers.” Prophetic Word I received
The revelation of these words began an intense and powerful new season in trying to understand “The Anointing.” For me, there had often being misconception of what it means to be anointed. I knew that God was promising a new anointing in my prayers, however I really did not know what this meant. It forced me to examine my life of unlocking the power of the anointing and favour of God on my life.
I commenced my investigation looking at what the Bible said about “The Anointing.” I launched into searching the Old Testament pattern of anointing Kings, Priests and Prophets. In the New Testament, I examined the anointing that rested upon Jesus and noted that the words, “Messiah” and “Christ,” both mean “The Anointed One.”
What opened before me was both profound and produced a breakthrough into a new realm of adoration and intimacy with Jesus.
The Greek word translated as anointed means to smear or rub. It was used by a shepherd as he rubbed certain oils into his sheep’s skin to protect them from disease. It was used of a physician seeking to help a person with sore muscles – he would pour oil into his hands and begin to rub it into the sore muscles of his patient. It was also used in religious purposes to consecrate someone into a position of authority. Hence the word anoint has to do with the rubbing or smearing of oil upon someone else.
Let’s for a moment consider this concept in the context of God anointing our lives. God Himself — the Great Anointer — filled His hands with the essence of the Spirit and then laid His mighty hands upon our lives, pressing the Spirit’s power and anointing ever deeper into us. As the oil gets inside of us, His anointing will kill the things of the flesh that need to die so that He may truly live within us. My best understanding of the word anointing is God filled His hands with the essence of the Spirit and laid His hands upon our lives, pressing the Spirit’s power more deeply into us.
This new anointing in my prayers was not a new truth but the development of my capacity to appreciate and appropriate God’s truth already revealed. John in his first epistle explained it so succinctly: ‘As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him.’ – 1 John 2:27. The anointing has been there from the moment of our salvation, given by the Holy Spirit to all believers.
My searching revealed this wonderful promise. God will anoint you with a more delightful oil – namely the oil of joy or oil of gladness (Isaiah 61:3).
I sensed that the new anointing in my prayers was two-fold
- The oil of joy. ‘You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy’ – Psalm 45:7; Hebrews 1:9
- In addition, there had to be a move in my prayer life – away from an unhealthy inward focus, to one that shows the love of Christ (oil of joy) in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8)
To understand these promises more fully, God revealed His “breaker” anointing in this season. A “breaker” doesn’t just receive the answer for their personal needs, but receives a breakthrough that opens the way for others to receive as well. The “breaker” anointing releases, delivers and sets free! God used the breaker anointing to break off old things and break me into the new areas and season of my life.
When we hit this breakthrough, we have to steward it with a humble heart, with purity, with gladness, giving all the glory to God, and begin to see another wave, and another wave that will ultimately increase our sphere of influence and effectiveness for the Kingdom.
For me the new anointing in my prayers is the overflow of Christ in my life! It can come to all of us as we spend time in God’s Word, seek Him with our whole heart, and worship Him. We increase the anointing by spending time in His presence.
