‘May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.’ (Matthew 6:10 NLT)
It was in a breakthrough season with the Lord that I discovered kingdom praying. The Lord nudged my spirit to move away from an unhealthy inward prayer focus, to one that shows the love of Christ in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth. I was introduced to the fantastic adventure of kingdom praying.
I would define kingdom praying as praying for things on the heart of Jesus. What are those things? For me, the foundation of kingdom praying is the expansion of His kingdom.
When Jesus taught the disciples how to pray in Matthew 6, the very first instruction He gives in the prayer is kingdom praying. If ever we needed an indication of how important it is to pray for His Kingdom, it is here.
But what exactly are we praying when kingdom praying?
Kingdom praying is asking God to bring Heaven here to earth, to accomplish His plan. The word, “Kingdom” used in Matthew 6:10 means “rule” or “reign.” So when we pray for the Kingdom of God to come, we are praying is that the “rule” or “reign” of God will be extended in the world. I pray that the kingdom of God be established today in the hearts and lives of those who do not know Him.
Kingdom praying has lasting value, eternal value, and importance in the kingdom of God. When we turn our attention to the things He cares about, then we are opening the door for Him to bless us as well. We are praying for those things that matter for eternity
Kingdom praying helps focus our prayers to the bigger issues of the kingdom, knowing the coming of the kingdom is the will of God. – “Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”
Kingdom Praying Plan
I offer a kingdom praying plan I use. The prayer plan is based on the days of the week. Each day has a specific emphasis concerning the spread of the gospel.
Monday – Missionaries
I pray for my brother and his family who are missionaries in Malawi. I have also adopted South Asia and pray for the indigenous missionaries of those countries as South Asia has been described as ‘the greatest concentration of lostness in the world.’
Tuesday – Nations
It is the nations of South Asia – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka that I bring before the Lord. You might consider adopting a particular nation that you will pray for.
Wednesday – People Groups
I use resource sites like Joshua Project to get information on people groups in South Asia and pray for specific people groups, both Christian and those who have never heard of Jesus. You could adopt a particular people groups in your prayers.
Thursday – World Leaders
I cover world leaders in prayer. I look around me, in the news, on social media, etc. What has recently been reported in the news around the world? What national issues are dividing the nation or causing rifts in families? What community concerns am I aware of at this moment? These things are the stuff that kingdom praying is made for.
Friday – Persecuted Christians
I have prayed for persecuted Christians for many years after the Lord placed persecuted Christians on my heart through the testimony of these great men of God – Brother Andrew, Richard Wumbrand, Watchmen Nee, Hudson Taylor, CT Studd, to name a few. The sacrifice these men and others made so that others can hear the gospel challenges me pray for my persecuted Christian brothers and sisters.
Saturday – Listening Day
I use this day to simply wait on the Lord and let Him impress in my spirit what He wants me to pray for today? I review what I have prayed during the past week and seek the Lord for the next phase in praying those issues.
Sunday – Local Church and a Heart for Missions
I plead with God for the local church, the body of Christ, will have a heart for mission in their local community.
This is simply a plan. It is offered as a model of how you can be involved in praying for the spread of the gospel without being overwhelmed. Please feel free to use this plan or develop your own from it.
Once we have an awareness of God’s kingdom, and are ready to offer yourself to His kingdom purposes, you join in His fantastic adventure of wanting God’s will done on earth as it in heaven and ultimately the establishment of His kingdom on the earth.
Are you ready to be part of this adventure?
